Daniel Claus (1727 1787) emigrated from Germany to New York in 1748. He became an interpreter with the Indian Department under Sir William Johnson and in 1760 was appointed as Deputy Superintendent at Montreal. His New York property was confiscated during the American Revolution and he died while in England prosecuting a claim for compensation. His son William Claus (1763 1826) was also associated with the Indian Department, achieving the rank of Deputy Superintendent in 1799. William Claus also served as a member of the Legislative Council of Upper Canada, 1812 1825, and of the Executive Council, 1818 1824. The Claus family was strongly connected with the Johnson family, as Daniel Claus married Ann (Nancy), daughter of Sir William Johnson.

Description: Lloyd W. Smith, a member of the Washington Association of New Jersey, was instrumental in acquiring and preserving the Wick House and the land which is now the Jockey Hollow unit of Morristown National Historical Park. Smith was also an avid collector of antiquarian books and manuscripts. He amassed a substantial collection of such materials, which he willed to Morristown National Historical Park. Upon Smith's death in 1955, the Park library received Smith's entire collection of some 12,000 printed works and more than 30,000 manuscripts.
The Smith collection ranges from 15th century incunabula to early 20th century works; however, the main emphasis is on the American Colonial and Revolutionary eras. Manuscript materials include correspondence, deeds, indentures, journals, letter books and account books. Correspondents and authors include Aaron Burr, George Clinton, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Lee, Robert Livingston, Philip Schuyler and George Washington. Washington manuscripts include correspondence, a letter copy book, and Mount Vernon journals and ledgers. Description: During and immediately after the Revolutionary War the U.S. Congress passed resolutions recommending that the states make provisions to pay pensions to soldiers and sailors wholly or partially disabled from earning a living by means of wounds, illness, or accidental injury sustained while in military service. Pensions were to be paid on account of the United States.
In 1779 New York established procedures for paying these pensions. Claimants were required to submit certificates from their commanding officer and surgeon verifying that the veteran received a disabling wound or injury during military service. Certificates were received by the auditor general (later auditor) who recorded them in this series and authorized the state treasurer to pay the pensions. Fully disabled veterans received half pay and those partially disabled received lesser amounts determined by the legislature. In 1783 the legislature set the amount of pensions for disabled "soldiers" at $5 per month.
The legislature in 1786 revised the procedures for claiming pensions. Six persons were appointed to examine claimants and their certificates in New York City and Albany and verify that the certificates were valid. These examiners then issued the claimant a certificate indicating the amount he was entitled to (half pay for commissioned officers, $5 per month maximum for non commissioned officers and privates). The examiners forwarded copies of these certificates to the state auditor who recorded them in this series. All "invalids" were also required annually to take an oath before a justice that they had been previously examined by the persons so appointed before they could receive their annual pension payment.
Notes: 5.3 cu. ft., (9 volumes)
The records in this series consist of copies of certificates and accounts of money
paid to pensioners.
Volume 1 (old volume Aa) contains an alphabetical list of pensioners to January 1, 1789 giving: name; rank; date pension commenced; number of months and days paid; and monthly and total amounts paid (in pounds).
Volume 2 (no old number), "abstracts of pensions paid to invalids by the State of New York in pursuance of acts of the legislature passed 1779, 1783, 1786," contains separate lists of pensions paid under each act, giving: name; rank; annual pension; date paid through; and total amount paid. Also included is a short list of pensioners paid in Continental currency, "new emissions," and specie.
Volume 3 (old volume A) contains copies of all or some of the following documents for pensioners paid 1779 1785: certificates from officers and surgeons describing the name, rank, and unit of claimant, and date, place, and nature of the disabling wound or illness; certificate from the governor in cases where the commanding officer was deceased; certificate by a justice verifying certificates by commanding officer or surgeon; Senate or Assembly resolutions awarding partial pensions; letter from auditor general or auditor to treasurer authorizing payment of pension; power of attorney from veteran authorizing another person to claim pension for him; and receipts for pension payments received.
Volumes 4 9 (old volumes "unlettered," B, C, D, Bb, Cc) contain copies of documents submitted by pension claimants under provisions of the third pension law (1786). These volumes give the amount of each annual payment plus a running total of payments for each calendar year (in pounds). It appears that pages representing accounts audited January April 14 are missing. Copies of the following documents or information are usually present in these volumes: certificates from the persons appointed by law to examine pension claimants; certificates generally give name, rank, unit, date/place/nature of wound; certificate from a justice that claimant was examined and obtained a certificate from examiners; notation of amount paid and dates for which the pension was paid; and date account audited.

Description: Rufus Alexander Grider was born April 13, 1817, in Lititz, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, a town founded by members of the Moravian Congregation in 1756. He lived in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania from 1870 to 1883, when he moved to Canajoharie, Montgomery County, New York. He taught art at the Canajoharie Academy until his retirement in 1898. He died February 7, 1900.
These albums comprise nine volumes containing over a thousand illustrations, chiefly hand drawn sketches and watercolors, with text related principally to the Mohawk River Valley and surrounding regions of New York State. The first three volumes contain a potpourri of images that include historic buildings and structures, natural features, early family records and historical documents, and Indian artifacts. The fourth volume is devoted to transportation via rivers, canals and turnpikes. The fifth volume includes text and pictures telling the story of the invasion of the Mohawk and the Schoharie valleys by Sir John Johnson and his Indians and Tories in 1780. Volume six contains material on Fort Ticonderoga, Lake Champlain, Lake George and the surrounding area. Volumes seven and eight are devoted entirely to the Cherry Valley and the Schoharie Valley respectively. The ninth volume contains text and illustrations devoted to the road built by General John Sullivan's army between the Mohawk River and Otsego Lake in 1779 during the expedition that destroyed the settlements and crops of the Iroquois Indians in central and western New York. Scattered throughout these volumes are numerous sketches of powder horns from the colonial wars and the American Revolution.
