Binghamton University offers eating disorder screening and education services to help determine the appropriate referrals for treatment. This is a screening evaluation only, not a full diagnostic or psychiatric evaluation. This meeting does not constitute ongoing treatment due to the limitations of our treatment setting.
On-campus-level services are those that would be determined to be an “outpatient” and recovery level of care; if a higher level of care is needed than we can offer, we will connect you with our treatment coordination team to help you find options for off-campus care, which will require using your health insurance.
Treatment options that may be discussed at this meeting include:
- Offering aid in communicating with your primary care provider, off campus mental health providers, and/or others you want involved in your treatment
- The potential for a referral to consultation with an on-campus dietitian
- The potential for a referral to our treatment coordination team to help you find options for off-campus or online treatment programs
- When the Decker Student Health Services Center (DSHSC) is able to monitor and/or treat your eating disorder
Making new eating disorder screening appointments
Making a new appointment for an eating disorder screening starts with making an appointment with the University Counseling Center (UCC) by calling 607-777-2772. The counseling appointment will help us to gather information that is pertinent to your eating disorder screening. Once that appointment is completed, your counselor will contact Psychiatry Services to reach out to you to schedule your initial nurse visit at the DSHSC.
The process involves two appointments and online screening forms:
- In the first appointment, the DSHSC nurse will obtain a blinded height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure. “Blinded” means that this information will not be shared with you. Your weight will be taken with your undergarments and a medical gown. Your blood pressure and pulse will be taken while you are lying down and again after standing for three minutes.
- The second 30-minute appointment with a psychiatric provider will be scheduled following your nurse visit. This meeting involves reviewing all the information gathered (online screening tools, physical data, and UCC information) and reviewing recommendations on resources you can access to address your concerns. In addition, you will be provided with information about the impact of your eating patterns on your body and brain.
Scheduled weigh-ins ordered by your off-campus provider
The DSHSC can work with your home provider to give them the information they need to manage your eating disorder. This is often a request by your off-campus provider for you to come to our clinic to have repeated weights and/or vital signs done by our nursing team. The DSHSC will require an order from your provider which outlines exactly what they would like from us. To make this process easier, the DSHSC has a form your provider may use for this purpose.
To get a copy of this form, send a secure message through the patient portal. to “Richard E. Moose, MD.” He will send you a copy of the order form. In the patient portal, you must upload the completed order to “Outside Medical Records” and send Dr. Moose a message stating you have done so. Dr. Moose will review the order and you will be notified by a return secure message that you may schedule your first weigh-in.
