Binghamton University provides a variety of software for students to use for academic and research purposes. 

Operating Systems

Windows Operating System

ITS recommends Windows 11 Professional for all University owned PCs and recommends checking for necessary updates: Windows Update

Mac Operating System

ITS recommends the latest version of MacOS and recommends checking for necessary updates: Mac OS Updates

Unix/Linux

ITS recommends the latest version of Ubuntu and recommends checking for necessary updates: Ubuntu Updates

Google Apps

If you are using Binghamton University resources, including email (Bmail),  you are expected to abide by the Binghamton University Computer and Network Usage Policy.

Binghamton University has partnered with Google to provide our students, faculty and staff tools to enhance communication and collaboration.

Google Apps Education Edition is a suite of hosted communication and collaboration applications designed for institutions of higher education.

Microsoft 365

A Microsoft Office 365 A3 license is available to all active students at Binghamton University. This license allows the Office application to be downloaded on personal computers and devices. Access to this license will be available until a student graduates.  Recent graduates retain an A1 (online access) license for 6 months.

NOTE: Check the software availability tool, the campus computer labs, BingView first. Then, contact the Help Desk - and finally your department if you cannot locate the particular software you need via campus resources. 

ArcGIS

  • A geographic information mapping system that is licensed for academic and research use. ArcGIS is available through BingView ot installation by contacting the GIS Core Facility.

Mathematica & Wolfram/Alpha Pro

  • A comprehensive computational software program supporting math, science, and engineering with symbolic and numeric calculations, data analysis, and programming.

Minitab

  • A Statistical Software which can look at current and past data to discover trends, find and predict patterns, uncover hidden relationships between variables, and create stunning visualizations to tackle even the most daunting challenges and opportunities.

IBM SPSS

  •  Interactive statistical analysis software package available for student academic use through Bingview

SAS

  • A statistical software package available for student academic and research use through BingView BingView

ivanti Secure VPN

  • A software application that provides current faculty, staff, and students remote access to the campus network.
  • Download and install the Secure VPN client from ssl.binghamton.edu. 

Bingview

  • A virtual computing environment that provides access to University licensed software, and statistical, math and engineering packages including Matlab, SPSS, STATA, SAS, Atlas.Ti, NVivo, Creo, and Microsoft Office 
  • Access virtual desktops by using VMware Horizon.
  • The VMware Horizon Client is available as a client for download or through html.

Software available on Public Computers

  • ITS maintains various software packages accessible to Binghamton University faculty, staff, and students and are available in the Public Computing Labs.
  • Use the searchable software tool to find information on specific software titles.
