University Medal
Established in 1991 by President Lois B. DeFleur, the University Medal is the highest honor bestowed by Binghamton University. The University Medal is given at the discretion of the Binghamton University president to recognize path-breaking achievements and true excellence in one's career accomplishments; a distinguished commitment to Binghamton University, higher education and the pursuit of knowledge; and/or a demonstrated commitment to the betterment of society through exceptional leadership and mentorship of the next generation. Commensurate with other prestigious accolades at Binghamton University, the University Medal is typically conferred at Commencement or other celebratory events to publicly honor the accomplishments of the recipient and recognize the ideals which Binghamton University seeks to foster among its premier students and esteemed faculty and staff.
There is no formal nomination process for the University Medal, though the President's Office welcomes suggestions regarding outstanding individuals. Nominees should be individuals whose life and work has enhanced the community, state, nation or world. Special consideration will be given to those who meet these requirements and who are distinguished by their support for Binghamton University. Nominations are accepted at any time. Send nominations to Pam Mischen on behalf of the President's Office.
STAR Award (Service Tradition Awards Recognition)
These awards have an application and requires letters and evidence for the nomination. The winners receive a letter from the University President, a STAR coffee mug and pin, and a check for $100.00.
Gratitude Notes, Bearcat Recognition, and Awards Database
Gratitude notes are simple sticky notes that can be picked up at Student Affairs; one can fill them out with a gratitude message and leave them for another. Bearcat recognition is a notch-up from a gratitude note; one completes a form that recognizes someone's effort and then Baxter will deliver a Certificate of Recognition and a letter from VP Brian Rose. Winners are also entered into a monthly drawing and have their names listed on a website and recognized at the next Divisional meeting (which makes me wonder if these awards are just for Student Affairs employees?). The Awards Database is being worked on; this db will contain other awards, both institutional and non-institutional, that can be used for recognition. Steve Rebello is the contact on most of these awards.
SUNY FACT2 Excellence in Instructional Support Awards
These two awards recognize excellence by full or part-time instructional support persons involved in supporting innovative uses of educational technologies to meaningfully improve teaching and learning by working individually or in collaboration with teaching faculty in the strategic application of curriculum within SUNY. The recipient or team receiving this award has demonstrated excellence through instructional support practice, and the ability to recognize pedagogical opportunities and to devise strategies for infusing the curriculum with innovative use of technology that aligns with learning outcomes.
Visit the FACT2 Awards page for more information about the awards and to submit a nomination.
