The Continental Army constructed a floating bridge near the headquarters of Gen. Gates to allow the army to forage for supplies or rapidly redeploy if the British Army attempted to break through the siege lines. The bridge was constructed from boards on rafts and was secured to each bank by cables and ropes. John P Becker, a local resident, recalled he and his father using the floating bridge to go from their farm on the east bank of the Hudson River to the Continental Headquarters south of Fish Creek.
