As the British retreated northward after the battle at Bemis Heights, Burgoyne temporarily established his headquarters at the Schuyler Estate on October 9. However, on October 10 as he retreated across Fish Creek he burned the estate to deny the Continental Army a position of concealment opposite the British position on the heights above Saratoga.
