WIRED ETHERNET CONNECTIONS

BINGWIRED 802.1X AUTHENTICATION

Welcome to our wired connection information page, featuring valuable details on Bingwired 802.1X authentication and how to connect devices securely.

Introduction

Bingwired 802.1X authentication was activated for Ethernet ports in the Residence Halls in August 2017. This authentication method protects the Binghamton wired network by requiring clients to have Binghamton University Computer Account credentials. It is the preferred connection method and may be a future requirement to connect to the Binghamton University wired network.

To configure devices for Bingwired automatically, use JoinNow. After a successful configuration, your Binghamton University Computer Account credentials will be used to sign in to the Windows Security box.

Manual Configuration for Operating Systems:

Mac:
A configured network profile is required on MAC OS 10.7 and higher. Use JoinNow for a smooth configuration process.

Linux:
For manual configuration, use the PEAP/MSCHAPv2 authentication method. Refer to the  Linux manual configuration instructions for details.

Windows:
Refer to the Windows Manual configuration instructions for setting up your device.

Wired Ethernet Connections

Ethernet Jacks in Academic and Administrative Offices

Image of a Ethernet Jack

A wired Ethernet jack is available in all academic and administrative offices for use by Faculty and Staff. If you face any connectivity issues, contact the ITS Help Desk at 607-777-6420 or helpdesk@binghamton.edu for assistance. For additional Ethernet jack installations, please contact the Telecommunications Department.

Ethernet Jacks in Residence Halls
In the residence halls, one wired Ethernet jack is provided in each dormitory room and most common rooms. To connect your device to the jack, you'll need an Ethernet cable. While ITS does not provide these cables to students, they are available for purchase at the campus bookstore and most electronics stores.

Additional Capacity
If you require more wired network jacks in your residence hall or office, you may use a mini switch or mini hub to add extra capacity. However, routers and wireless access points are NOT permitted as per the ITS Acceptable Use Policy.

Mini Switches for Students, Academic or Administrative Departments
Students in the residence halls and academic or administrative departments may provide their own mini switches. For information regarding a purchase, contact the ITS Helpdesk  at 607-777-6420 or helpdesk@binghamton.edu  or your ResCon.

Note: Users of the Binghamton University data network are required to abide by the Binghamton University Computer and Network Acceptable Use Policy.
